Tens of thousands gathered for the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting ceremony in New York on Wednesday (November 29).

The ceremony was broadcast live on NBC with a slew of star studded performances, including singer Gwen Stefani, Seal and pop rock band Train, leading up to the moment 50 thousand lights came to life.

Mayor Bill De Blasio, NBC News’s Lester Holt and Today show hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie were on hand to light the 75 foot (22.9 meters) Norway spruce.

The Rockefeller Center Tree has been a main staple of Christmas in New York City since the Great Depression, with hundreds of thousands of people visiting the tree while it’s on display.
